File >   Description
  Open video file Loads a local video file into AVS. Among file formats supported are : AVI (Indeo and DivX included), MPG, MPEG, Video-cd, WMV, ASF, some Quicktime format, ...The Real Media file format is not supported (needs a separate licensing). Video files are previewed.
  Open online video Opens a video stream from the Internet. Windows Media streams are supported. AVS can open a stream from a http server or a Windows Media server. AVS can open Windows Media script files (.asx) and let the user choose one video stream among the several video streams that a Windows Media script sequence can declare. Quicktime streams and Real Media streams are not supported.
  Open shot bitmap template This lets you choose a transparent bitmap to decorate the shots.
  Most recent used files Reopens a video file you opened earlier.
  Exit Exits AVS.

View > Description
  Toolbar Shows/Hides the main toolbar. Selecting the option toggles the state. Please note the position and dock state of the toolbar is saved when you quit the application.
  Video preview Shows/Hides the video preview window. Selecting the option toggles the state. Please note the position and dock state of the video preview window is saved when you quit the application.
  Timecode Shows/Hides the shot timecodes instead of shot frames. Timecodes are expressed in the following format HH:MM:SS:mmmm (SMPTE). Video professionals use SMPTE timecodes.

Media > Description
  Play Plays the video. Alternatively, you can press the space bar.
  Pause Pauses the video. Alternatively, you can press the space bar.
  Stop Stops the video
  Play 1/10 Plays the video at one tenth the normal video rate
  Play 1/3  
  Play half Plays the video at half the normal video rate
  Play 0.8  
  Play full Plays the video at the normal video rate (video internal data)
  Play x 1.5 Plays the video at 1.5 time the normal video rate
  Play x 2 Plays the video at twice the normal video rate

Most of those functions are available as soon as a video file is loaded. Make sure to understand that slowing the rate of video both has effect on the picture frame rate and the sound restitution. Expect a weird sound/music experience!
